I ordered 5 of the most popular sheet sets on Amazon (all under $50) and tested them for two weeks. I slept in them, washed them multiple times, and compared them to my $200 "nice" sheets. Here's what I found.

Test Results
Best Overall: Mellanni Brushed Microfiber Sheet Set
Price: ~$30 Queen
Mellanni was the clear winner. Out of the package, they felt soft and silky — not at all what I expected from $30 sheets. No chemical smell, no loose threads, just nice soft sheets.
After two weeks and three washes, they still look and feel great. Minimal pilling, no fading, no shrinking. The deep pockets fit my 14-inch mattress easily and stayed on all night.
Are they as nice as $200 cotton sheets? No. But they're about 15% of the price and about 80% as nice. That's a great deal.

For twenty bucks, the Utopia sheets are surprisingly decent. They're not as soft as the Mellanni set and they feel a bit thinner, but they're perfectly functional.
After washing, they did pill a little and the fabric isn't as smooth. But if you're furnishing a guest room, a kid's room, or just need cheap sheets that work, these are fine.

The "Egyptian Cotton" One: Shilucheng 1800 Thread Count
Price: ~$30 Queen
Let's get this out of the way: these are NOT Egyptian cotton. They're 100% microfiber (polyester). The "1800 thread count Egyptian" marketing is misleading at best.
That said, they're not bad sheets. They're soft, they fit well, and they feel similar to the other microfiber sets. But the false advertising is annoying, and they're not better than the Mellanni set despite the fancier name.

Cons:
- NOT Egyptian cotton (it's microfiber)
- Misleading marketing
- No better than other cheap microfiber sets
Most Hotel-Like: CGK Unlimited Hotel Luxury
Price: ~$35 Queen
CGK's "Hotel Luxury" sheets are marketed as feeling like fancy hotel sheets. Do they? Ehh, sort of. They're smooth and soft, and they have that "slippery" feel that some hotel sheets have.
They're decent sheets, but I didn't think they were noticeably better than the cheaper Mellanni set. And they're a bit pricier.

- Smooth, silky feel
- Good fit
- Nice selection of colors
Cons:
- More expensive than competitors
- Not necessarily better quality
- Hotel-feel is subjective
The Big Question: Are Cheap Amazon Sheets Worth It?
Yes — with caveats.
If you:
- Want soft, wrinkle-free sheets
- Don't mind microfiber (polyester)
- Are on a budget
- Hate ironing (microfiber barely wrinkles)
Then cheap Amazon sheets are a great deal. For $30, you get sheets that are comfortable, durable, and way better than you'd expect for the price.
But if you:
- Prefer natural fibers (cotton, linen)
- Sleep hot (microfiber traps more heat)
- Want that "luxury" feel
- Care about breathability
Then you'll probably be disappointed. Microfiber is polyester, and it doesn't breathe like cotton. Hot sleepers, in particular, might find them too warm.

My Recommendation
For most people, the Mellanni Brushed Microfiber set is the best cheap sheet set on Amazon. It's soft, well-made, and an incredible value at $30. I was genuinely impressed.
But if you sleep hot or prefer natural fibers, save up for a good cotton set (I recommend Brooklinen or Parachute). You'll pay more, but the breathability and natural feel are worth it if cotton is important to you.
And one more tip: wash them before you use them. All new sheets have sizing chemicals from the factory. A quick wash removes them and makes the sheets softer.
